Update 4/2008

Tommy had his surgery and is doing very well. He looks pretty rough right now but should be fully head up in a couple of weeks.

Tommy and Jinx Surgery Fund

We did it! Thank you!!

Update 5/2/08: Jinx had surgery yesterday

From Jinx's foster mom: She had her surgery yesterday morning and is doing very well. She stayed the night in the hospital, and I picked her up today at 5:00 pm when I got off work. She was very happy to see me, very alert on the ride home, went straight for her bed and passed out. She has a pain patch in her back that is delivering a constant pain killer. They found a fragment the size of a quarter, they didnt have to cut it out, it was free-floating in there. She has an incision about 6 inches long on her right back leg. She is supposed to be mobile in a couple of weeks, but the doctor says the scar tissue in her socket was pretty intense and she may never have full function of her leg. By removing the fragments, she will be in much less pain, and certainly have much better use of her leg. Thanks you to everyone who has donated towards her care and kept her in your thoughts. She is one of the best dogs I have ever met, and I have known many!

Update 4/28/08

Tommy is doing well. We are still waiting on further testing results but he is recouping from surgery quite well. Unfortunately our surgery bill for him came in $600 over the estimate, so our goal now has been raised.

Jinx has been scheduled for her surgery on April 30th.

A huge thank you to everyone who has helped us be able to get these amazing dogs the medical attention they so need. We are extremely grateful and very touched by your generous donations and how quickly everyone came forward to help. Thank you!!

Update 4/24/08: Tommy had surgery today

Thanks to the help of so many faithful MABBR donors, Tommy had his surgery this morning. The specialist was able to find the abscess core and to clean it out thoroughly. A drain was inserted to help with healing. They did a search of the connective tissue but could not find any foreign body, so we still don't have answers to what caused the abscess to occur. Samples were taken to be sent off to do further testing. Tommy will remain on antibiotics, and with the drain, it should allow any residual infection to come out rather than get sealed back up. The surgery did reveal that the surrounding tissue appeared normal and there were no other signs of problems beyond the abscess. So we are very hopeful that this is good news and Tommy will be back to his old self very soon. We will update as soon as the other test results come back.

About Tommy:

Nothing makes Thomas happier than being able to stretch out and relax. In fact, Tommy is all about comfort all of the time. Unfortunately, for the last three months Tommy has been dealing with a mass that has developed on the left side of his face. He has been seen by a veterinarian and the doctors were unable to diagnosis Tommy's problem.

After several visits and alot of poking and proding, the doctor suggested seeing a specialist and prescribed a host of medications to reduce the size of the "swelling". Tommy took anywhere from 8 to 10 pills a day for two weeks and the mass eventually disappeared. Tommy's face looked to be back to normal.

Last week the "swelling" returned so more medication was prescribed. The mass has resurfaced and is slowly increasing in size and this time the medication is not working. The only thing that can help Tommy now is a specialist.

You can tell by looking at Tommy's numerous scars and his mutilated front left paw that he has not always had the easiest life. This boy has had to endure more pain than any animal should. Today Tommy is in a foster home living the life he has always deserved. He's not one to complain, but we know he has to be uncomfortable and in pain. Last time Tommy saw the doctor, the mass was so huge that his left eye closed shut.

Please help us get Tommy the treatment he needs so he doesn't have to keep dealing with this - he's been through enough already. It's time for Tommy to enjoy the new appreciation he has found in foster home painfree. Your donation will help Thomas find his comfort again.

Tommy's Rescue

On July 13, 2007 37 dogs were found on a South Holland, Illinois property, leading to the largest dog fighting bust in Illinois history.

Tommy was one of these dogs. Read about his rescue story here.

Tommy has flourished in our program. This dog is amazing and loved by everyone who meets him.

Faith, Family, Future…

We could see those 3 words on the water tower of the Chicago area village that we came from.

All three of us kept our faith. We prayed that the cycle of violence and neglect would end.

After our owner was busted for dog fighting, we prayed to pass our temperament tests at the shelter so that rescues could take us in.

For the future? We pray that Santa Paws will find us, snuggled under the blankies in our new fur-ever homes!

Nicknames: Tom, TomTom, Sir Tom

A couple months ago when we made the trip from Chitown to KC, my cohorts and I agreed to travel incognito by car rather than plane. There was only room for 2 cages in the car for the ride, but there were 3 of us. I called “shotgun”! Most of the way here, I lay with my butt on the passenger seat, but my head was rested in the lap of the gorgeous, blonde driver. I knew right then and there, that things were starting to look up!

The name’s Bond. James Bond. Yea, I wish! Sometimes when I lay in my crate, I daydream about how cool it must be to be him, or the best actor to play him, Sean Connery. You know…lots of money, suave looks, that to die for Scottish accent, timeless appeal, and beautiful women! I kind of fancy myself as a wannabe. I can be rough and tumble with the best of them, but deep down, I’d really rather be in the arms of someone who loves me most when I act all teddy bear-ish! Some things are for your eyes only! I have a hard as nails exterior with a marshmallow filling-haha!

I've made it into foster care and it has been something new and wonderful. I stayed with a family, in their home! Now, if I just had a fireplace, a bearskin rug, a smoking jacket, some slippers, a pipe, a lovely guest, and a Martini (shaken not stirred), I’d be set! I have pretty good manners. I don’t jump up on people, and I know “sit” and “leave it”. I’m good with children.

Just like Bond, I don’t take any crap off of anyone! So, I will HAVE to be an only pet. That means you can’t be bringing any other fur wearing animals into the house-ever. Sometimes, I kind of zone out when I’m playing with a toy. Very expensive toys, that are not what they appear to be (a lot like myself).

I’ll also require a soft food diet. All those crazy stunts I’ve performed have played havoc with my teeth.

I’m 70lbs of pure muscle. I’ve had a tough life, and it shows. Did I mention that I’m missing some toes? I lost them to a dame wearing stilettos, that couldn’t dance to save her life!

Until we meet again,

Tom
