Their Stories
Already bursting at the seams, we could not turn our back on 8 severe
cruelty/neglect cases we learned about in late July/early August, 2008.
With ailments ranging from eye infections, sun spots and tumors to butchered
paws and demodectic mange, these dogs need your help to realize their
second chances.
Bull Terriers
Our "Kansas 5" were seized during a puppy mill bust of 183 neglected
dogs in Kansas. Kept in horrifying conditions all their lives, they require
treatment for skin issues, infected wounds and tumors/growths in addition
to overall checkups for heartworms, receiving standard vaccinations and
being spayed / neutered. The Kansas 5 are currently in boarding at local
vet clinics in the metro at an approximate cost of $200/month per dog.
They need your assistance for both medical
and boarding expenses.
Bluebird Bluebird is
emaciated and covered with demodectic mange and skin infections. Was it
practical to try and save her despite this painful and often expensive-to-treat
skin condition? We think so and we think you'll agree if you meet her
and experience her amazing temperament for yourself. We just couldn't
let her down. And when an amazing foster home stepped up to nurse her
back to her feet, we couldn't be happier. But it will be a long road ahead
for this amazing pup. Bluebird needs your assistance
for medical expenses and care. > More
about Bluebird
Update 9/22/08: Bluebird is the kind of
success story that fuels our efforts. In a short couple of months we've
watched her blossom from being covered in open wounds and nearly hairless
to becoming an absolutely stunning girl. Her progress has absolutely exceeded
all our expectations. We are so thankful to everyone who has donated so
far and to her foster mom for taking such great care of her. Visit
her page for her new pictures!
Conan
Conan's previous life consisted of being neglected in the elements at
the end of a chain. This handsome Dogue de Bordeaux came to the shelter
covered in fly bites and with open sores on his ears from his wounds being
left untreated, and is heartworm positive. Conan deserves better! He is
currently in a boarding facility costing approximately $200/month. Conan
needs your assistance for both medical and boarding expenses.
> More about Conan
Update 9/22: Conan had his heartworm treatment
a couple of weeks ago. He is having a hard time with it. Since treatment
he has begun to lose weight and at times has trouble standing and walking.
He's been to the vet several times and so far we can't isolate what is
wrong with him. We have ruled out stroke and his bloodwork is coming back
good. We will continue to run tests and try to figure out how to help
this special boy. We're very worried about him.
Leo
How could someone torture a young puppy? We don't know, either. Leo is
emaciated and completely missing his rear paws. The tragic situation with
his paws unfortunately requires amputation. Leo
needs your assistance for medical expenses.
Update 9/22: Leo had his amputation surgery
and is getting along fabulously. He's gained weight and is breezing through
all of these hurdles without the tiniest set back. He's truly an inspiration
and testament to the amazing resiliency of the breed. We are so proud
of him. He reminds us every day to never give up. We still need to raise
much needed funds to pay for his surgery.
Their ailments
Bull Terrier Justice: Numerous
hot spots, open sores and facial wound infection. Vaccinations and spay
surgery. Update 9/22 : Justice is in
foster care. She has had a long hard haul getting healthy but we are
nearly there. At the time of rescue Justice was pregnant with two puppies
but she miscarried them likely due to her poor condition.
Bull Terrier Freedom: Numerous
hot spots and open sores. Tumors / growths on outside of rear legs.
She appears to be in a lot of pain and flinches at any touch near the
growths. We are doing xrays to find out the source of her discomfort
and to explore treatment options. Vaccinations and spay surgery. Update
9/22: Freedom is currently in boarding and has come along really
well. She's gained weight and her wounds are nearly healed. She's a
favorite among our kennel volunteers.
Bull Terrier Grace: Numerous hot
spots, eye infection. Vaccinations and spay surgery.
Update 9/22: Grace is in foster care. Upon our vet visit with
her we learned she was veeery pregnant and she had four precious puppies,
who are all healthy and doing wonderfully. Pictures of the babies are
coming soon. We are incredibly grateful to her foster mommy who stepped
forward to welcome one special girl into her home and then ended up
with five ;)
Bull Terrier Creed: Numerous hot
spots, open sores, and tumors/growths. His pain is not as severe as
Freedom's but he will also need to undergo treatment. Vaccinations and
neuter surgery. Update 9/22: Creed is
fabulous. He is currently in boarding along with Freedom and doing very
well. His sores are also nearly completely healed and he's looking really
good. We hope to have new pictures of the whole crew in the upcoming
week.
Dogue de Bordeaux Conan: Fly strike,
skin infection, malnourishment, heartworm positive and will require
treatment. Vaccinations and neuter surgery. (updates above)
Pit Bull Terrier Bluebird: Demodectic
mange, open sores, skin infection requiring aggressive mange treatments,
special baths, special diet, antibiotics and other medications to boost
her immunity and re-grow fur. Vaccinations and spay surgery. (updates
above)
Pit Bull Terrier Leo: Requires
amputation surgery. Extremely emaciated, severe parasites requiring
week in veterinary clinic on IV fluids. Vaccinations and neuter surgery.
(updates above)
The Cost of Second Chances
We are estimating the above medical cases will be between $3000-$4000
after their medical treatments and boarding expenses. That is not including
food and basic necessities. We know it's a lot, but every bit helps. Whether
it's $5 or $500 - they need you! Stay tuned to
www.mabbr.org and we will update you on their progress and be sure
to let everyone know you stepped up to help deserving dogs in need!
Medical Plea Addition:
Sweet Baby Coal
Baby Coal
just joined our program, escaping deathrow, only to be diagnosed
with Parvo. He is currently receiving treatment at a local veterinarians
office. We are hopeful he will pull through.
Donations are even more needed that we've now added another medical
funding crisis. Coal is a special boy and really deserves this chance.
For more info on Coal, please visit his
page.
Update 9/22: Coal is still at the emergency vet but he is holding
his own very well. We are cautiously hopeful that if he continues
to improve that he will be able to come home in the next couple
of days.
