Coffeyville flood and oil spill victims

On July 13, 2007 37 dogs were found on a South Holland, Illinois property, leading to the largest dog fighting bust in Illinois history.

Kevin Taylor, 29, has been charged with 37 felony counts of owning, breeding or training a fighting dog, 37 felony counts of aggravated cruelty to animals and one felony count of possession of cocaine, in addition to multiple misdemeanors. The judge set bond at $100,000.

So what happened to the dogs?
Three of them just joined MABBR's program.

Catherine Hedges says she gets a lot of e-mails from people who want to help Michael Vick's pit bulls. "We can't," she says. "But we can save these South Holland dogs.

Special thanks: Catherine Hedges and Linda Bober for your dedication and determination to get these dogs into rescue!

September 21st 2007

MABBR was contacted when these dogs were seized and asked to help by taking one or two when they were released. We agreed, having no idea that in the meantime we'd deplete our funds by rescuing and treating our parvo puppies. Two months after we originally heard their horrific stories though, word came that they had been released and needed to be picked up for rescue immediately. What to do?

Well, we do what we do. Knowing the horror these dogs have faced and hearing how they still past their temperament test with flying colors, we could not back out on our word. Not only did we end up taking one or two -but we brought home three of these incredible survivors.

Original Photos:

At 7am on Friday the 21st, our President started out on her roadtrip to go pick up the dogs that MABBR was taking. She arrived to meet them around 6:30pm in Chicago. She was blown away. Covered in scars, most with no teeth, one of our dogs has had a foot chopped up, all skinny and malnourished - and ALL wagging their tails and pleading for attention from a human. Though we see dogs every day from deplorable situations that have endured so much more than we could ever imagine and remain friendly, seeing these dogs also remain so loving, so kind, and so happy to see a person, filled her heart with such pride for this breed that she could hardly keep the tears from pouring down her cheeks. THIS is why we do what we do for these dogs - because they never give up and they never stop believing in us no matter how horribly they have been treated....

She had the pleasure of meeting the other remaining dogs as well, and all were wonderful. We hope with all of our hearts that other rescue groups will step up and help the dogs still there, as they are so deserving.

With her friend and fellow rescuer Catherine Hedges by her side, they loaded up the dogs and started on the long road back to Missouri.

Driving through the night the foursome arrived in Missouri at 6:30am. Though our volunteer was nearly a zombie by now, she couldn't have been happier with how the trip went. So many hours in the car and not a peep or complaint out of any of the dogs. Our precious boy with no toes, road shotgun the whole way keeping her awake with sweet ear kisses and laying his head and "club" foot in her lap for much of the drive. Even with her eyes barely open, she couldn't help but rave about how special and amazing these three dogs are.

Now at the veterinarian's getting checked out, spayed/neutered, and all their vaccinations, they will soon be ready for foster homes. Currently we are totally full and the dogs will be going into paid boarding. We could really use your support in helping us cover the cost of boarding and would very much love to see them all in foster care very soon. The dogs have been temperament tested multiple times and have proven to be nothing but stable and well adjusted temperaments. Just like a good pit bull should be. Our hearts are bursting with pride.

Please donate to help cover the cost of our Survivors or consider fostering today!

There are 9 dogs still needing immediate rescue. By adopting a dog currently in our program, you can help open up space so that MABBR can help other South Holland dogs still needing our help.

Dedicated to the abused, fought and neglected Pit Bulls everywhere.
Special thanks Alison Saunders
